Inspiration drum solo

One of the best drum solos I'd watched in a long time. Melodious and technical. I absolutely love Benny Grebb.

Thomas Pridgen - Wax Simulacra

Here's an uber sick drumming song Wax Simulacra by Thomas Thomas Pridgen, ex-drummer of The Mars Volta. I really like this one. Very technical and musical at the same time.

Here's a drum cover of by Luke Holland which I thought is really well done. (Drum transcription by Anthony Lopez)

JB Bouvet - Solo Deconstruction

Amazing amazing young drummer. Any aspiring drummers should take a listen. Part 1 addresses the mentality of drummers and part 2, the solo deconstruction.

Check out what JB has got to say. I find it really useful.

32th odd note

This is a pretty cool concept. We all learned 32th note but most of the time it is in even groupings. Odd grouping add a little twist to it.

This video is from the teacher's camp that Mike's lesson held recently. Do check out Komposteradgalning He improved so much since I saw his videos many years back.

Here is a video of a cool drum off video by JB Bouvet, Guitar Center Drum-Off 2011 Champion. The composition is rhythmic and melodious.

You can make any time signature musical

Here is a clip of Chris Coleman at NAMM, sharing drum tips. Chris Coleman is one of the drummers that I highly respect. It is really heartwarming to see lots of drummers giving back to the drum community!

This is really inspiring and I highly suggest drummers who haven't seen this to check it out. His lesson - "You can make anything musical" is in the 25/15 time signature (Part 3). Crazy cool sick stuff going on. Let's do more mathematical drums.

Do check out part 1 and 2 as well.

The Korean Drummer That Steals The Show

This is pretty interesting.

Adapted from the description box:

" Kwon Soon Keun became a worldwide YouTube sensation when someone posted 'Korean Drummer Steals The Show' on YouTube several years ago. I was so fascinated by his drumming and went on to make a documentary film called 'A DRUMMER'S PASSION'.

The film was well received by public and it was selected for screenings at 2011 Vancouver Asian Film Festival and 2011 Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival. Mr. Kwon and I were on CP24 and Rogers TV Daytime for interviews and the popularity of the film was so high that we got so much attention despite it is only a short film. Now, we are planning to make a feature film on Mr. Kwon and he seems happy to get his spotlight back at 71. (He is turning 72 in 2012.)

He has been playing with young musicians in 20's and 30's and he seems to fit well with them. Recently, he performed in front of more than 600 people and I recorded the performance to share with the rest of the world. This may not become another 'Korean Drummer Steals The Show' but I hope more and more people watch his video and feel the joy as much as I do."

Hand techniques - Speed, Control, Consistency

I realize I haven't been posting beginner lessons so here you go.

This is a basic lesson of how to hold you stick, different exercises that you can practice to achieve a higher speed and smooth roll. Having the right technique is important. It becomes sort of like a habit and is harder to change later part in your drumming so make sure you get it right.

If you have been playing for quite a while and notice that your drumming speed haven't been increasing the way you wanted, chances are you are doing it wrong. Check this one out.

John Bonham

  • John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 – 25 September 1980)
  • Drummer of Led Zeppelin Rolling Stone readers' pick in 2011 placing him in first place of the magazine's "best drummers of all time"
  • He began learning to play drums at the age of five, making a drum kit out of containers and coffee tins, imitating his idols Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich
Drum history

One of the drummers you have to know. John Bonham invented the Bonham triplets, first heard in Moby Dick by Lep Zeppelin. You can hear it being used in the video at 4:15

Here is one video that teaches the Bonham triplet. The concept is a basic pattern of RLfoot(Tri-p-let)  but to get it up to speed it is rather intermediate/advance.

Have fun throwing one of these in solos.

16th note Triplet Lick

If you like drum department or super tight gospel playing, be sure to check out this fill. Delicious.

Double Stroke roll exercise

Sweet exercise for double stroke accents. An intermediate exercise to keep those smooth rolls. This is also an inspiration for solo ideas.

Half time Shuffle Fill

Half time shuffles are fun but you need some more licks to spice it up even more. Check out this fill based on 16th note triplet. Throw one of those in your playing.

  • Berklee College of Music; Boston, MA (Bachelor of Music, Cum Laude-Professional Music/Drum Set Performance, 2008)
  • Capitol Records; Hollywood, CA (Studio Intern, 2007)
  • Studies With: Rick Considine (2004-2007), Terri Lyne Carrington (2006-2007), Scott Ollhoff (2000-2004), Mike Mangini (2006-2007), Kenny Aronoff (2007) (adapted from alectackmann.com)

This is one sick drummer. His chops really impressed me. He don't really teach but he slows down to us see what's going on. Still it is good enough for me. Gotta learn from this guy.
